Many patients who are considering treatment to remove unwanted facial and body hair are concerned about what to expect during the procedure, what the results will be, and how much the treatment will cost. We have answered many of the most commonly asked questions on this page and included a laser hair removal cost list to help our Virginia Beach and Chesapeake-area patients.
There has not been any laser hair removal equipment that has been proven to provide "permanent" results. However, Lumenis LightSheer® offers a minimum of an 85 percent reduction of hair growth, as assessed by the FDA. Although some follicles may not be completely destroyed, they will be sufficiently disabled to the point that they produce only fine, light hairs that do not respond to further treatment.
You will feel a tingling/stinging sensation during the treatment, but most people tolerate the procedure well. Topical anesthetic is available to increase your comfort, if you would like to choose this. After your treatment you will experience a sunburn-like sensation on the treated area. This will last for only a few hours. You can use ice packs for comfort, if necessary. Visit our testimonials page for firsthand accounts of the laser hair removal experience.
Our treatments are typically spaced six to eight weeks apart, depending on the area of the body that is being treated. We typically provide eight of these treatments, spaced over a period of 10 to 14 months. Our laser hair removal cost list reflects prices for eight treatments at our Virginia Beach office.
You should see an 80–90 percent reduction in hair growth. Once a significant number of follicles have been affected, only light, fine hairs will grow in the treated area. It is unlikely that your skin will be perfectly smooth, but you can expect the hair that remains to be much less visible, and you will not need to shave, wax, or pluck nearly as often as you do now. Our clients are generally pleased with their results.
You will see results immediately. It usually takes two to three weeks for all of the hair in the treated area to fall out. Many patients see a big difference after their first session, with some reporting a 50 percent reduction in hair. Patients may see re-growth, but this will be addressed as they undergo the eight sessions in our package.
This is one of the great benefits of laser hair removal. Reduction of hair bumps and ingrown hairs will be markedly improved after your first session. This applies to all body parts such as face, neck, bikini line, legs, backs, and underarms.
The laser energy is absorbed by the melanin, or pigment, in your hair. The darker the hair, the better the results. Because white and gray hair does not contain any pigment, it does not respond well to laser hair removal. However, the advancements in laser technology have made it possible to treat some types of hair that are gray, blonde, or red, as long as they contain at least a small amount of melanin. During your pre-treatment consultation at our laser hair removal center, we will assess whether or not your hair color is treatable. If we don't think that good results will be achieved, we will let you know.
If you are Caucasian, we prefer that you do not use a tanning bed or spray-on tanning products while receiving laser treatments. The lighter your skin stays, the better your results will be. When your skin is tan, we have to protect the pigment in your skin from the laser. When your skin is lighter, we can target the pigment in your hair with more energy.
That will depend on the melanin content in your skin. When you come in for your pre-treatment consultation, we will assess your skin type using a scale known as the Fitzpatrick Skin Typing Test to determine whether you are a candidate.
The preference is that you do neither. You can shave the area as needed, but you should avoid waxing, plucking, and threading. This irritates the treatment area and can actually slow down the progress of hair reduction.
The only area near the eyes that we provide treatment for is the area just above and between the eyes, otherwise known as the "unibrow." Studies have shown that treatment too close to the eyes can actually cause damage. The safety of the patient is our first priority.
For safety reasons, we do not treat patients who are pregnant. If you should become pregnant before completing all of your laser hair removal sessions, we will suspend your treatment and finish your sessions after you deliver. Women who are nursing may safely undergo laser hair removal.
There are certain medications that may interfere with or trigger complications during laser hair removal, including Accutane®. Most medications, however, will not cause any problem. During your consultation, your medical history and current medications will be reviewed to ensure that nothing you are taking will affect your results.
