Bringing Advanced Laser Hair Removal Equipment to Virginia Beach

As long as people have been making cosmetic changes to their appearance, there have been attempts to solve the problem of unwanted hair. Cutting the hair off at the skin's surface by shaving and pulling the hair out at the roots by plucking or waxing are the most traditional methods, but these only provide temporary results. Technological advances have produced more permanent and long-term solutions by damaging the follicle itself, preventing re-growth of the hair. Today, the advanced laser hair removal equipment in use at our Virginia Beach office, located near Chesapeake in the Tidewater region, provides effective long-term hair reduction with a minimum of discomfort and hassle.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal works by sending pulses of a specific type of light energy into the skin. This energy is absorbed by pigment, the component of skin and hair that gives them color. Since most hair is at least slightly darker than the skin around it, the hair follicles receive most of the light energy and are consequently damaged. Once the follicle is damaged, the hair eventually falls out and either grows back very thin and pale or does not grow back at all.

Because the only hair follicles that will be affected during treatment are those that are in an active growth cycle, multiple treatments over time are usually needed to produce ideal results.

Technology

Early laser hair removal equipment was only effective at removing dark hair from light-colored skin. However, newer technologies allow people with fairer hair or deeper skin tones to benefit from laser hair removal as well. The key is to use the right type of treatment for each patient.

At Atlantic Laser Hair Removal, we strive to provide safe and effective removal of unwanted body hair for as many of our patients as possible. The Lumenis LightSheer® was the first system to offer successful treatment for a broad range of skin types and hair colors, and was the first to be allowed by the FDA to claim permanent results. Candidacy

Although many people were once considered poor candidates for laser hair removal due to dark skin and/or red, blonde, or grey hair color, advanced laser hair removal technology now makes it possible for most people to be a candidate. During a pre-treatment consultation, we will assess your skin type using a scale known as the Fitzpatrick Skin Typing Test. If you are not a good candidate, we will let you know right away. Also, people with certain medical conditions that may be aggravated by the procedure are advised against undergoing laser hair removal treatment. The doctor reviews each patient's medical history prior to treatment to ensure that no such conditions are present.

Treatment Areas

One of the most significant benefits of the advanced laser hair removal equipment used to serve our Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Tidewater-area patients is that the treatment can be applied to any area of the body, with the exception of the area very close to the eyes. The following are some of the most commonly treated areas, with descriptions of the treatment packages that are available through our practice.

Lips/Chin

One of the most common treatment areas for women is the upper lip and chin. Patients may choose to have only the upper lip treated, or only the chin, or to have them both treated at the same time.

Face

For women, facial treatment includes the upper lip, chin, cheeks, and sideburn areas. Men may want the upper areas of their cheeks treated to give a more defined border to their beard. There are also packages for both men and women that combine facial and neck areas.

Unibrow

Due to safety concerns, laser hair removal is not performed on any area directly adjacent to the eyes, with the exception of the area between the eyebrows. Laser hair removal for the treatment of a “unibrow” can save patients the time and discomfort of repeated plucking or waxing.

Neck

The neck area can be treated alone, in combination with the face, or as part of a back, neck, and shoulders package. Men with very coarse beard hair often benefit from treatment in this area.

Back

The back is a large area; consequently, treatments will take longer and cost somewhat more than those of most other areas of the body. Treatment may be confined to the back alone, or include the shoulder area and the back of the neck.

Legs

We offer treatment packages that address the thigh area alone, the lower legs alone, or the entirety of both legs. Treatment for the lower or entire legs includes the knees and feet.

Bikini Area

Bikini area treatments are available for both men and women and can be done in any style. For women, treatment includes the strip of hair that runs between the pubic area and the navel, commonly known as a "happy trail." Bikini area treatment may also be combined with treatment of the lower legs.

Underarm

Underarm treatments are popular and take a relatively small amount of time. The skin may be sensitive after treatment, so consult the doctor if you are concerned about irritation from deodorant use or shaving between treatments.
